CARNEGIE PTA

BOARD MEETING

JANUARY 15th, 2014

Call to order

The meeting was called to order at 8:00am.  The previous minutes were approved with one update: our January 8th, 2014 meeting was postponed to January 15th, 2014.

  1. Guest Speaker, Suzanne Schreiber, District 7 candidate for the School Board, attended the meeting to discuss her platform and answer questions.  The election is February 11th.  Samantha stated that Carnegie Elementary/Carnegie PTA is not specifically endorsing Mrs. Schreiber.  We intended to invite her opponent, Gene Beach, to the meeting as well.  However, he was unable to be reached.

Principal's Report – Mr. Pascoe

- We will not be receiving transfers from D-F schools this year.  There are only four  elementary schools that are:  Patrick Henry, Lanier, Salk, and Grissom.

- Everything seems to be running smoothly with the new changes made to the daily schedule.

President's Report – Samantha Fiscus

- Junior Great Books will begin in mid-February.  It is for 2nd through 5th grades.  They will meet for 6 weeks during their lunch time.  We need parent volunteers for each classroom to facilitate the meetings.  We especially need a new group of parents to start up the 2nd grade classes.  You may contact Susan Lamkin or Shelie Chavez if you are interested.

- The Bulletin Board in the front hall is currently available.  Let Susan Lamkin know if you would like to use it.

- Transfer Applications:  Out of neighborhood transfers are due between March 3rd – April 18th.  Middle School applications are due January 24th.

- We had to change the date for the Jog-a-thon to a Thursday due to Early Release Day and other scheduling conflicts.  It will be Thursday, March 13th.

- The only concern with the new daily schedule seemed to be from the upper grades and the lunch time allotment.  However, the lunch times have remained the same length as they were before.

- Mr. Pascoe requested that we form a new PTA position; a Facilities Coordinator:

This person would be responsible for addressing certain issues and expenses that arise which are not covered by TPS.  They would research the best price and possibly purchase the item (with reimbursement).  At this time, we need to replace a few blinds.  Over Christmas Break, Ms. Kathy purchased a new vacuum. These are two examples of items that could be handled under this new position.  We will post the new position on the website.

- The 2nd Grade evening program was changed to February 11th @ 7:00pm.  So the next Unit meeting has changed to this date/time as well.  The morning performance will remain February 28th @ 8:30.

- Brandi Thomas has been working with Mrs. Snyder on a Social Studies Enrichment Program.  Extension activities in the classroom will follow each event. They are currently working on:

3rd Grade

May 2014 / Land Run Day!  (A mock land run followed by a picnic   lunch of authentic pioneer food on their claim.)

          4th Grade

1) Spring 2014 / A Day in the Life of a Homesteader's Kid with Sky Shivers
2) Fall 2014 / One Room School House at Rose Hill (A field trip to Perry, Oklahoma)

          5th Grade

March 2014 (Students will travel to Wright Elementary to witness a theatrical production called, “Revolutionary Women”)

 Treasurer's Report – Heidi Serage

- Ms. DeVerges has $1,000 to spend on the playground.  If you see a need or repair, please bring it to our attention.

- We've already spent our maximum allotment for Kleenex and wipes.  If you can bring an extra box or two, we would appreciate it.

- Our goal for the Book Fair every year is to raise enough money to cover the AR costs of $2,500, however, we only raised $1,944.20 this year.

New Business

-  Our crossing guard shared a concern she had about traffic safety with one of our Carnegie parents.  After their discussion, the parent said she would express those concerns at our next PTA meeting.  Our discussion included the pros/cons and feasibility of flashing lights, speed bumps, speed limit signs, sending home reminders and reporting license plates to Campus Police/Tulsa Police Department.

- The calendar was reviewed.

- The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 5th @ 8:00am in the cafeteria.

- The meeting was adjourned at 8:51am.

Respectfully submitted,

Shelie Chavez

PTA Secretary
